The starting point for this interpretation was a reimagining of Broadway Boogie Woogie as not only a graphic score, but as an actual physical structure; an enormous multi-storied latticework of horizontal and vertical passageways interrupted by a seemingly random assortment of coloured ‘rooms’. The finished piece moves across this structure from left to right, scanning its architectural space and ‘sounding’ its discoveries.

The dominant colour of the passageways is yellow, which is represented by a single waveform tuned to G major. This waveform is heard throughout most of the piece, becoming more ‘coloured’ (via the addition of adjacent notes on the keyboard) whenever it encounters clusters of ‘rooms’ (the larger blocks of colour scattered throughout the structure). There are two major instances of this room/tone clustering; one approximately a minute and a half in, and the second at the three minute mark.

Whenever the timeline encounters one of the 279 smaller squares of colour within the passageways, it sounds an identifying instrument hit: woodblock for red, gamelan for blue, chimes for white. Because the timeline is moving across several passages at once, these hits often coincide with one another, at times piling up into simultaneous clusters of 20 or more. This is particularly pronounced whenever the timeline crosses a section of vertical passages, which are announced not only by an enormous number of instrument hits, but by a vertiginous drop in pitch. The most pronounced of these ‘drops’ occurs at the 3:36 mark.
