As a musician, I was immediately drawn to the fact that this work was created in a 16x16 grid. It felt recognizable in a musical sense, as if I were reading a piece of sheet music. In my interpretation, each of the three colours is represented by a separate chord, the combined sound of which is markedly melancholic and reflective of the sullen nature of the painting’s colour scheme. These chords are played sequentially from left to right and top to bottom, just as one would scan a page of sheet music, but at a randomized tempo that better approximates my initial viewing experience of the painting. Coloured noise was then added to the mix (blue and red mixed with a quantized noise source) as well as reverb and delay to further accentuate the sense of a ‘darkened’ palette.
